The International Center for Creativity and Sustainable Development(ICCSD)is the first center under the auspices of UNESCO(category 2)in the domain of “creativity and sustainable development”. ICCSD seeks to explore the role of creativity in the promotion of sustainable development and the 17 sustainable development goals(SDGs),especially focusing on elements of the creative economy, cultural and creative industries,as well as components of creative cities. “Creativity” is an all-encompassing word. It involves many different fields and is linked to the arts, culture, science and technology. Similarly,“sustainable development” is also a broad concept, which is closely related to poverty eradication, ecological protection, economic development and social equity. Therefore,it is necessary to clarify the relevant concepts and define “creativity” and “sustainable development” in practical terms.
This report will briefly review and discuss relevant concepts. Based on the statistical analysis of some cities being part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network(UCCN)and several cases on urban renewal, this report will give a preliminary interpretation of the role of creativity and creative economy in sustainable urban development.
