New Tourism has been a faddish term ever since Poon coined the phrase in 1993,and repeatedly referred to in large numbers of tourist academic literature since published. As a concept for alternative tourism or Ecotourism,as opposed to mass tourism, this paper criticizes New Tourism from both theoretical and practical points of view. Starting with a discussion of mass tourisms’ definition and an overview of its development, the author reasons that mass tourism is a type of holiday, widely accepted by a large number of people. Mass tourism is cheap, convenient, safe and comfortable(CCSC),as opposed to the mass, standardized and rigidly packaged(MSRP)tourism defined by Poon.Proceeding with a chapter on New Tourism, the author questions its established foundation, feasibility in developing countries,as well as assumed relations with mass tourism. Furthermore, proposed new mass tourism as a more likely transition form between New Tourism and mass tourism is also discussed. Finally, the real world tourism growth trend over the last four decades will be given as evidence against Poon’s prediction of the possible substitution of mass tourism by New Tourism, proving the sustainability of mass tourism over a comparatively long period of time.China’s tourism development is described in this paper to illustrate the point that mass tourism will not be replaced by New Tourism. New mass tourism,as a suitable pattern of tourism for developing countries, will evolve from traditional mass tourism and take its place in the mainstream of future global tourism.
