In the past two decades,China has experienced an unprecedented growth of foreign direct investment, which was mainly brought by multinational corporations(MNCs).More than 400 out of the global Fortune 500 corporations have investments in China. While on the other hand,in the realm of nonprofit, international NGOs have caught up their pace in the recent years, most of the major international nonprofit organizations have established their presence in China. This, coupled with significant thrive of national and local NGOs,has formed the landscape of an emerging “civil society” of China. It is declared that China has come to “the spring season of public welfare organizations(Civil Society)”(2001,1193343Yan Minfu). However, few alliances have been established between nonprofits and corporations in Mainland China. This stands in sharp contrast to the close cooperation between NGOs and MNCs that has developed over the last two decades in western countries. This presentation introduces the concept of strategic alliance, and its nature, forms and conditions. The presentation also shares some successful cases that World Vision has practiced in Hong Kong as well as in Southeast China, where the social and cultural context is close to the Chinese culture. These cases illustrate the mutual benefits that can be achieved through strategic alliances between NGOs and MNCs.And at the end, implications of the strategic alliance to China’s NGOs and MNCs are summarized.
