The story of The Smile Train is,in part, the story of two ideal partnerships. On the one hand,it is our collaboration with Computer Associates. And on the other hand,it is our partnership with the China Charity Federation.
Unlike traditional non-profit cleft organizations that send medical teams to developing countries to perform surgery,The Smile Train empowers local surgeons and medical professionals in these countries to perform the surgery themselves. These local medical teams can then leverage the modern training and support provided by The Smile Train to give indigent children the exact medical procedures they need.Surgeries are performed by experienced medical teams for as little as one-third the cost of bringing in surgeons from outside the country. The Smile Train’s average cost-per-surgery is less than US$250.
The corporate and personal commitment that got us started and has kept us going on a fast-track toward changing the lives of ever more children is the first part of our story. The Smile Train would not be what it is today without the generosity of Computer Associates and its Chairman Emeritus,Charles B.Wang.From our very founding in 1999,it was Mr.Wang’s personal financial commitment that allowed The Smile Train to become a viable charity. With his support,The Smile Train made a commitment of US$20 million for programs in China.Since then,we have helped 50,000 indigent Chinese children and nearly 2000 doctors have benefited from free medical training.
Mr.Wang never stops his support and personal contribution.Instead, his friends and his company,Computer Associates(CA),also have continued to assist the Smile Train to become the professional and responsible charity.
