Good morning and thank you all for giving us the opportunity to be here,I am little late here so I will try to make my remarks quick.
It’s been very interesting experience for me to attend this past two days for a few discussions about the partnership, business, civil society.Corporate social responsibility has been extremely sophisticated and thoughtful and I am encouraged by the prospects for all of you in partnering together. There has been tremendous among the discussion over the past two days and this morning with the regards to we need to develop the financial resources.
What I hope to do is to spend next few minutes with you talking about the other resources, talking into the human capital resource on referring to Volunteerism. Before that, let me explain very quickly what APCO is.We are not a non-profit organization.I am a consultant within a consulting firm.We focus on public affairs and have a corporate social responsibility proctor. So we work with multinationals to help them with their corporate social responsibility activities, including re-managing the reputation, which is why some businesses do this for social investment, community development, community relations, reporting and evaluation about their corporate social responsibility.
I have the pleasure working for United Way for a number of years in volunteer centres and that’s why I want to share my experiences with you.One of things I often do is to recommend to companies if they don’t think themselves as George just mentioned to volunteer when they support the organization, such as yours.Part of the reason is that companies want to convince the world that they care and they are committed to be a good corporate citizens, they have to start with their employees first. They have to start within their house. The best way to do that is to get their employees to volunteer and to experience personally the companies’ commitment to the community.I think the other thing that companies could be doing more why they should be thinking about it as there is tremendously untapped resources of people’s carrying capacity to give amongst their employees. Also we have seen elsewhere in the world,I think that would be true in China as well. When companies adopt their company contribution with volunteerism, they see a much bigger impact on whatever their goal is if the goal is to make the difference,if the goal is to get the visibility or PR.When you put people in combination with those financial resources or in kind resources, they would see much bigger value or bang for their buckets they say.I talked to people though,a lot of them say,“oh,well, you know, volunteerism is a very hard sale here in China”.Maybe so,but I don’t think that volunteerism in the spirit for hanging that isn’t a part of China. In fact, many of you and your organizations wouldn’t exist today as worry about the volunteer spirit.
It just matter how your give and how you become involved.I think that we need to think about it.I don’t know how the answer is,but I hope to give you some ideas today.Volunteers can accomplish everything.I think two previous presenters have highlighted that. They can do any thing that your dollars or contributions are looking for. They can raise money, they can provide services, they can get you goods or products,so for.United Way,Darwin has made very clearly from the presentation. But do you know who raised all that money?Volunteers. For Special Olympics, who is working at these events?A lot of those people are volunteers, and same thing for smile train. So we got to keep in mind these programs don’t exist without volunteers.
When you have people volunteer, you raise their awareness, his dealing with initiated attitude perception, and his organization is dealing with the stigma.Sometimes just simply getting people to know there is the problem and their need when you get the people volunteer, they become more committed, then they bring with them additional resources, other volunteers, financial contribution. You create a movement of carrying the concerns about your organization. These are my reasons we should be involved and think about the volunteerism.
What’s the benefit of the volunteerism,I think there are lots of value that actually is a good foundation for partnership between NGOs and business. If you take a look at what they trying to get out of it and what they can get out of it from next turner basis. Both business and civil society can get the broader support, raise the awareness exposure about what they trying to do,deepen the relationship with stakeholders,we all work with the community,we all have stakeholders, this is a great way to put in the way to make them involved.
From the company perspective, volunteers help humanize the company.Sometimes we don’t think those big companies are made of people.Volunteerism is a great way for companies to show the world that they are made of people.
By the same token, you are able to do cancer services by having those people be involved in your programs. Both for NGOs and for businesses,it will be a great way build team and moral to have people connect on the different level. For businesses, their employees can develop skills, leadership, management and even sort of technical skill, they can practice their accounting skills, their teaching skills, things like that which they need for work. For NGOs,you are accessing the expertise whether there is computer programming or management skills.Certainly both benefits from the leveraging the dollars, individuals.
You are getting different perspectives on life to get out of your little cubical. From your personal standpoint,I think you can see a lot of benefits.Above all,I mean Volunteerism should make differences, but it should be fine and I think we should get that.So what is the company looking for when they think about mobilizing their employees as volunteers. These are some of the expectations.Organization needs to be ready that it’s very hard to recruit a lot of people to volunteers as these are not their jobs.So you need to make sure that the staff in your organization should appreciate volunteers, they should see them as the natural part of your organization. The jobs you want them to do are clearly defined.Otherwise people would have nothing to do and get bored.
Keeping in mind, volunteering and the time are the currency.People don’t like to see their time wasted, just like they don’t want to see their money wasted.People care when people come to volunteer or want to be involved.People should think of such matters on what you need and how to use volunteers.
