The shape of the estuary changed frequently，affected by the political situation，the selection of main sailing routes and the accumulation of geographical knowledge. On the maps of the sixteenth century，many toponyms with the prefix of “Ma-” appeared，which may probably refer to the place of Macao，and the forms of which may origin from the local toponyms related to the faith of Mazu（妈祖），and the toponyms “Macao” was gradually stereotyped during the late sixteenth century. On the maps of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries，the toponyms probably related to Macao were marked on different places，formerly on the coastline，later on an island.

Only in African continent，Francesco Sambiasi drew many sources from Giulio Aleni’s world map. It is worthy to mention that five other toponyms in Francesco’s Kunyu Quantu were from neither of the two above sources，which indicates the possibility of its other origins. In terms of geographical knowledge，the map does not display as much new knowledge as those counterparts made by Ricci and Aleni. In the portait of Arctic，Francesco even returned to the misconceptions that had been abandoned by Ricci and Aleni. Some unsolved mysteries on Francesco’s Kunyu Quantu provide clues for further study.

Some people also questioned that this field was not big enough to be an ology.
From anthropology，religious study，art，history to literature，Macaology includes more and more fields of study in recent years. Although Macaology develops well in every field，it should be broader to include deeper studies and keep up with the times. I am happy to see that the ancient Chinese maps of Macau become one of the research topics of Macaology，but there is still room for improvement. This may result from the lack of ancient Macuau maps.
The trend of historiography development is to combine different studies in every related field to enhance research. It is not enough to only rely on the interpretation of the literature since it is hard for people to have a sense of space. History study is the process of imagination and inference；the literature makes the process more reasonable and logical. However，if we can add maps as one of important evidences in our research，we could get more information about time and space. Nowadays，scholars gradually realize the importance of maps and more and more scholars put more emphasis on cartography.

These descriptions are significant and irreplaceable for understanding the international trade at that time. Some of them have not been translated into Chinese，so this paper will translate them and offer an initial exploration on relative problems.

Based on the exchanging process of animals from the two continents in the Age of Discovery，this paper analyzes the 23 kinds of animals portrayed in the maps and thus makes a conclusion that Ferdinand Verbiest introduced new knowledge of Western zoology after Matteo Ricci and Giulio Aleni. Images of those animals were represented in portraits of later Qing dynasty，including Gujin Tushu Jicheng（Collection of Ancient and Modern Books），and Shou Pu（Analogue of Animals）. Thus Ferdinand Verbiest improved communication about Western zoology based on Christian cultural background；meanwhile，western animal knowledge serves in response to the Chinese tradition of zoology.

Furthermore，it can give a direct reflection on the relationship between the Western and the Chinese Christians during the Early Qing Dynasty. According to our research，we found out that the letter was written by Lu in Shanghai on 12th September 1681，and the receiver should be Philippe Couplet，S.J. who had left his mission post in Jiangnan province at the beginning of August 1680 for Macao arriving in October of that year. And at that time，he was living in Macao and preparing his trip to Europe. The discovery of the letter indicates Lu had visit to Macao not less than twice. And we suppose that his famous article An account of Macao（Aomen Ji）was likely written by his second visit for the study in the St. Paul’s College（Colégio de São Paulo）.

However，in 1654 he published De Bello Tartarico Historia，a work concerning the military history of the rise of the Houjin and its replacement of Ming dynasty with a small map of China，in which Macao was illustrated in extraordinarily big size，without any colour. The author finds that there is a hand-painted color map of China preserved in the Old Palace Museum in Taipei which came from Martini’s De Bello Tartarico Historia.
Since Martini had personally experienced the dynastic change from Ming to Qing between 1643 and 1651，his small map of China in De Bello Tartarico Historia should be regarded as the first map showing territory controlled by Qing dynasty，at that time Taiwan was not under Qing’s control. In this paper，the author also tries to take this opportunity to analyze the content of this small map of China in De Bello Tartarico Historia and look for its influence on the Novus Atlas Sinensis.

With some quantitative analysis，we can reconstruct the cartographic method of Martini. His map was deeply influenced by the chosen original version. By four crucial steps，he changed the Chinese map into a Western style map based on the modern gridding of longitudes and latitudes.
