Analysis of the Evolution and Current State of China-Israel Relations

For more than six decades,China-Israel relations have evolved along a path less traveled,on which it reached a stage of comprehensive and stable development only after many ups and downs. A strong impetus to enhance bilateral relations notwithstanding,some obstacles remain. This article provides a review,an analysis and commentary on the history and prospects of this relationship.

Ⅰ.From the founding of the two countries to the establishment of diplomatic ties:A turbulent journey

The end of the 1940s was a period of epic change for both the Chinese and Jewish people. The People’s Republic of China and the State of Israel were founded in the east and west of Asia in 1949 and 1948,respectively. At the time,there was no direct conflict of interests between the two countries and the establishment of diplomatic relations,which would have provided an excellent opportunity for further development of a long-standing friendship,should have been a matter of course. However,due to complex factors,it was not until 43 years later when the two countries normalized relations. During these four decades,their relationship went through roughly four stages.

The first stage:Friendly contact. When the State of Israel was established on May 14,1948,the Chinese press,including papers published by the Communist Party of China,all applauded the development. On May 27,the Central Hebei Guide,a newspaper published by the Communist Party of China in the liberated areas of North China,commented:The new Jewish nation,which is called the State of Israel,has declared its establishment on the 14th.To the Jewish people,who have lived for two millennia without a homeland,drifting from place to place and suffering humiliation and bloodshed,their wish fo
