In recent years,as China’s urban development has gradually shifted from the extensive expansion to the connotative growth and from incremental development to stock development, most of the economically developed regions in China have launched new urban development paths that aim at “urban renewal”. As a new concept of urban construction and development, urban renewal differs from the previous “urban construction” and “urban transformation” that pay more attention to physical space, because it emphasizes the coordination between economic and social development as well as inclusive growth of sustainable development.
One of the core concepts of urban renewal is to pay attention to the needs of people in cities, especially of different groups. To a larger degree,it emphasizes the social problems brought about by urban renewal, such as the establishment of a multi-party participation mechanism,so as to better deal with the relationship between efficiency and fairness and promote cities’ self-renewal ability. At present, many cities in China are faced with the increasingly serious population aging problems, which has also triggered the transformation of demand for urban space to a certain extent. The government, enterprises and the public must fully consider the important impact that aging factors have on urban renewal.
