Great Powers’ Interests in Southeast Asia

By virtue of its important geographic position, rich natural resources, tremendous development potential and the fact that it includes such an independent political force as ASEAN, Southeast Asia boasts high strategic value, and therefore has always been a place where great powers have been competing for influence. In the post-Cold War period, the four major AsianPacific powers, the U. S., Japan, China and Russia, have their own interests in this area. Because of their different interests, contradictions and conflicts among them are inevitable. Nonetheless, driven by some common interests, the four major powers still have mutual coordination and cooperation in this area.
