Good afternoon, distinguished guests. I am an anthropologist. I retired in Korea two years ago, then I was invited to teach in Guizhou University. During this time I started to get an acquaintance of Guizhou province. I am very happy to be here today not only as a speaker but also as a listener to have the chance hear so much insightful thoughts and ideas.

When I entered into this area I attended an ecological experiment,I didn’t know what DNA or RNA were. Reading and research of ecological books helped me lot. I often went to different places in Guizhou to observe and study their life and ecological conditions.

Ecosystem includes macro and micro ones. Ecological civilization thinks that macro ecosystem includes social ranks etc. If culture was included, then human society and nature ecosystem make a difference. Human’s society practice on plants, corps and animals, and culture works a lot on ecological system.

Let’s firstly talk about the micro ecosystem. In the picture we can see the Qianling mountain which located in central city with a population of four million people has over 5 thousand monkeys. I often observe their life and social structure. I found they have much in common with human beings in communication. They have ranks; they fight for status, and contribute food to the monkey king. I think the group of monkeys is an embodiment of micro ecosystem.

Let’s then talk about the macro ecosystem. Natural resources and environment can be used in building wood houses and making fabrics. I made studies in agriculture, anthropology and biodiversity. Some houses, irrigation systems, toilets, domestic animals make the unique ecosystem. Some ethnic areas make sacrifice to communicate with ancestors by killing pigs, sheep, cattle. It’s about the macro ecosystem. But today, infrastructures, dams, factures pollutes villages after they entered village. So I understand why ecological civilization was taken as an important goal in the 13th Five-Year Plan ,because industrialization has been transferred from western countries to the remote areas, which is harmful for local ecological environment.

Now let’s see micro system. Food fermentation, like Maotai spirit,a outcome of germ fermentation inside,is a micro system. Disease is also a micro system. Fermented tea is the major type in Guizhou. Confucius who established Confucianism thousands of years age once said that we couldn’t catch birds into cages for the room is limited and it’s hard to catch them again or to catch more. It is wisdom of history which should be well developed.

Chinese herbal medicine sells well and are of different kinds in Guizhou, like Miao and Dong herbal medicines. How to collect that information is a problem for us anthropologists. Sun is source of energy of human beings and there’s a famous tale about sun and his 9 sons. In southeastern Guizhou, women make patterns of sun on their clothes. In the future we shall explore more concepts about ecological civilization and anthropology, and they are part of our future life and culture.Thank you very much.
